ESPN names biggest remaining roster hole for the Buffalo Bills
Sam Navarro-USA TODAY Sports

On Thursday, ESPN named the biggest remaining roster hole for each NFL franchise and they went with an obvious choice for the Buffalo Bills.

ESPN thinks the Bills' biggest roster hole is at wide receiver as the team enters the thick of the offseason.

From ESPN: We can have some interesting arguments about Keon Coleman, whom the Bills took at the top of the second round. My friend Mike Tanier pointed out that Coleman's film is filled with him almost making a lot of highlight catches in 2023: tracking the ball well but lacking top-end speed and getting it knocked away or not catching the ball cleanly. Coleman's Playmaker Score was fairly typical for a second-round receiver.

The problem is that Coleman may now be the Bills' best wide receiver. Khalil Shakir is a speed demon who had excellent advanced metrics last year (55.1% DVOA on 45 targets!), but is he ready to be a starter in the NFL? Curtis Samuel is an average slot receiver who has never ranked above 39th in receiving DYAR. Mack Hollins will be 31 years old this year. Recent signee Chase Claypool is on his fourth team since 2022 and hasn't been able to replicate his rookie year production in 2020. KJ Hamler and Quintez Cephus are "never healthy" lottery tickets. Forget Stefon Diggs; I'm not sure this team has really replaced Gabe Davis yet, either.

Buffalo's wide receiver group may end up being just fine this season, but until they show they're "just fine", there are a lot of question marks surrounding this group.

The Bills don't really have a "go-to" guy with Stefon Diggs now with the Houston Texans.

Buffalo is hoping that rookie wide receiver Keon Coleman can be a go-to wide receiver for Josh Allen -- he certainly has the traits to be that kind of receiver in the NFL -- but asking a rookie to be that guy from day one isn't exactly fair.

Beyond Coleman, the Bills have several "lottery tickets" and role-player type options that shouldn't be counted on to carry the offense over the course of the entire season.

Outside of a blockbuster trade, there aren't many ways that Buffalo can drastically improve their wide receiver room this deep into the offseason.

Perhaps targeting a free agent like former Las Vegas Raiders wide receiver Hunter Renfrow could be a viable option for the Bills. Renfrow is just a couple of years removed from a season in which he caught 103 passes for 1,038 yards and nine touchdowns.
